How to add VAT to a price

VAT is always calculated on the net (ex-VAT) amount. At the standard UK rate of 20% you multiply the net by 1.20 to get the gross (VAT-inclusive) total. The VAT itself is net × 0.20.

StepFormulaExample (£100 net)
VATnet × 0.20£20.00
Gross (incl. VAT)net × 1.20£120.00

Reduced and zero rates

For the reduced 5% rate multiply by 1.05. For zero-rated supplies the gross equals the net. Choose the rate on the calculator before pressing Add VAT.

When to use this

Use Add VAT when quoting or invoicing from a net price, checking a supplier’s figures, or converting catalogue prices to VAT-inclusive totals for consumers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 20% VAT to £50?

Multiply £50 by 1.20 to get a gross of £60. The VAT amount is £10.

Is add VAT the same as net to gross?

Yes. Adding VAT turns a net (ex-VAT) figure into a gross (VAT-inclusive) total.

What if I only have a gross price?

Use the reverse VAT calculator and press Remove VAT — divide by 1.20 at the standard rate, do not subtract 20%.
